For some in an era of austerity and cuts it is a frivolity too far.
But for others it provides a sprinkle of Christmas magic which lifts the spirits and gives the town a boost.
Councillors will decide on Monday whether to bring the ice rink back to the town centre - balancing the estimated costs of some £111,000 with the benefits.
Opinion is divided with many saying they loved it and made the town feel more Christmassy, while others tagged it 'an appalling waste of money.'
