Conservative candidates Keith Simpson and Chloe Smith will be hoping to hold onto their respective seats as the count gets underway for Norwich North and Broadland.

The first of the ballot boxes have already started to arrive at The Space in Sprowston, which has been split into two in order to accommodate the separate counts.

Ms Smith, who is standing for Norwich North, will be hoping to retain the seat she has held since 2010.

She is up against Labour's Chris Jones, Green Party candidate Adrian Holmes, Liberal Democrat Hugh Lanham, and Liam Matthews from the Pirate Party.

The result for Norwich North is expected to come in at around 4am.

Meanwhile, Mr Simpson could have to wait a further two hours to find out if he has retained his Broadland seat.

The Conservative candidate was re-elected in 2015 with a majority of more than 16,000 votes in the 2015 general election.

Standing against Mr Simpson is Labour's Iain Simpson, Green Party's Andrew Boswell, UKIP candidate David Moreland and Liberal Democrat Steve Riley.

Acting returning officer, Phil Kirby, who is responsible for the count's management, said there had been a 'steady response' at polling stations across both constituencies.

He said: 'I think it is on par with the [last] general election. I don't think we will see the dizzy heights of the referendum turnout.'

In 2015, there was a 72.4pc turnout for Broadland, and a 67.8pc turnout for Norwich North.

Mr Kirby said security had been 'tightened' at the count this year, with people being checked as they enter.

There are 120 people taking part in the count.
