It comes after road safety concerns were raised as traffic diversions were put in place following a major gas work project in Oulton Broad.

The project, which is being conducted by National Grid, has seen four diversion routes put in place - including Bridge Road becoming a temporary one way system.

Since the diversion began on February 20, police have received complaints from both residents and drivers regarding the manner of driving and speed of cars on the diversion - particularly along Caldecott Road.

As a result, a community speed enforcement campaign is now being carried out by police officers.

PC Edward Frazer, from Lowestoft Police, said: 'Complaints have been a mixture of speeding and drivers not driving in a manner fit for the road at locations such as Caldecott Road and Prospect Road.

'The majority of people are driving appropriately but there are road users who are causing danger to others.'

He added: 'The situation with the diversion is not ideal but we have to make sure we are all as safe as possible.

'Since we started we have generally seen improvements in the standards of driving and we will continue to monitor this road until the road diversions have finished.'

Following the start of the community speed enforcement campaign, on March 10, PC Frazer said 'numerous' motorists had been caught exceeding the 30mph speed limit on the Caldecott Road diversion - with one 28-year-old driver arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

An area of concern for road safety is the junction of Borrow Road and Caldecott Road.

A Borrow Road resident said: 'The speed is the main thing. They come round and cut the corner from Caldecott Road too fast which is dangerous when residents are reversing off their drives.'

A National Grid spokesman added: 'The project is progressing to schedule. Currently we are due to have fully completed the work, including reinstatement, and have left site by April 7. Traffic management is expected to be lifted at some stage before that date.'
