Describing his work as a bit sketchy could not be further from the truth.

In fact, for cartoonist Brian Adcock, of Sprowston, he has become something of a perfectionist when it comes to his art.

And now the married, father-of-one has proven his talent by scooping a hat-trick of national awards for his work.

Mr Adock, who creates cartoons for the Scotsman, Scotland on Sunday and the Independent, was recently awarded cartoonist of the year for the third time at this year's Scottish Press Awards, set at Glasgow's Radisson Blu Hotel.

The 46-year-old said: 'The main thing about winning these awards is it gives me confidence. Being a cartoonist is a solitary profession and I get very little feedback. Winning means I must be doing something right and I have got some positive feedback.'

The former Great Yarmouth High School pupil, who remembers drawing all the time as a child, has also been the runner-up for the same award four times.

His career began in 1999 when he moved to Prague and met wife Hana. Although he tried to pursue a career as a cartoonist there it did not work out and the couple returned together to Norfolk in 2001, where they had their daughter Isobel, now aged 13.

It was then Mr Adcock, of Lone Barn Road, finally got his first big break and started doing a cartoon strip and political cartoons for the Prague Post.

Admitting that he was 'nervous' about tackling politics, he said, 14 years on, he was pleased he was thrown in at the deep end and added that it took him six hours from idea to page to create each cartoon.

'I really like doing the characters and seeing them come alive,' he said. 'I'm always amazed how the characters conjured themselves.

'It does that magnificent thing where it just draws itself.'

From shutting himself away for hours at the weekend, to finding inspiration from meditating and people watching, Mr Adcock said it was an industry he loved working in.

And for budding cartoonists out there he advised: 'Be internet-savvy, learn software skills and draw all the time. You have to really want it.'
