Sheringham town centre echoed with the low hum of the engines of classic cars from Jaguars to Jeeps today, when 200 vehicles pulled up on the town car park to register for a 46-mile drive in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

The annual run, which is organised by a 15-strong team of North Norfolk Classic Vehicle Club (NNCVC) members, has previously raised £6,000 for Sheringham-based charity Break.

The air ambulance was named as the club's nominated charity last year, when the run attracted 220 entries from all over the country and raised £3,000.

Cars on show on Sunday ranged from Bentleys, Ferraris and Rolls Royces, to a 1967 dormobile, a Citroen 2CV and, possibly the oldest vehicle taking part, a 1925 bullnose Morris brought along by David Judd of Overstrand.

Visitors also had a chance to browse stalls set up on the car park, and tuck into tea and bacon butties served up by members of Cromer-based charity About With Friends, which supports people with learning disabilities.

Retired engineer Mr Judd, who took seven years to rebuild his car, has been a NNCVC member for a number of years and regularly takes part in the annual run.

'It is an excellent event,' he said. 'It is extremely well run and not only does it raise a lot of money for charity, but it is also a great opportunity to meet people and make new friends.'

NNCVC committee member Dennis Broughton, who helped organise the run thanked all those who helped make it a success.

'We are hoping to equal last year's total for the air ambulance,' he said. 'We are very pleased to support such a good cause, and to have the chance to help About With Friends.'

After being waved off by town crier Tony Nelson and Sheringham mayor Doug Smith, drivers taking part in Sunday's run set off to soak up the atmosphere – and the sunshine – at Hoveton Hall, near Wroxham.
