Ballroom, latin, sequence and occasional bursts of line dance have been lighting up Brandon Leisure Centre for a year now after the Brandon tea dancing group moved from its former home at the town's community centre.

The 40 dancers aged 60 to 80 toasted the anniversary with a live music dance with keyboard player David Last, with couples taking to the floor last Wednesday.

Organisers Reg and Val Young say the dances are a great way to keep active and that moving to the leisure centre helped to boost numbers.

Mr Young said: 'Dancing is fun and keeps you interested, active and focused but most importantly your social life takes off.

'We had been meeting for over 20 years and when we moved numbers were sadly in decline, but thanks to our new home and surroundings at the centre we have gone from strength to strength.

'We are celebrating our first anniversary here at the centre with our first ever live music dance with one of the most well known keyboard player in tea dance circles David Last and it is a real delight to get him for our celebration event.

'We have some very good experienced dancers here, the standard is very high. Plus there's a great atmosphere and some good lively music. We have to thank the Centre because moving here has made all the difference to us.'

Mr Young added that the live music tea dance would be repeated if it proved to be a success.

Nigel Snape, Manager of Brandon Leisure Centre, said: 'We congratulate the group on their first anniversary here at the Centre. They are a lovely group of people who are very experienced dancers and the popularity of this club shows the wide range of ways people can keep active here at the Centre. I am so pleased to see this group grow from strength to strength.'

The weekly tea dances take place at Brandon Leisure Centre from 2pm to 4pm.

It costs £4 per dance and tickets can booked at the Centre on 01842 819150.
