A Roman soldier could be in trouble with his superiors after having his hair dyed pink to help a local lady with health problems.

In a clear breach of legionary legislation, Peter Button went for the eye-catching new look, which clashes somewhat with his army outfit.

The move is a signal that fundraising efforts to help the family of a young woman who may need a kidney transplant are well under way.

Hayley Bird, 25, from Mundesley suffers from nephrocalcinosis and Williams Syndrome, which have both affected her kidney, which is no longer functioning properly.

Her dad, Christopher Bird, has stepped forward and volunteered to be a donor for her should her kidney function become even worse.

Now fundraising is under way in the village to help Hayley, who was an angel in the traditional Mundesley Christmas Eve pageant last year, possibly to have a holiday.

One of those helping raise cash is Mr Button, one of the pageant's Roman soldiers, who in a bid to kick-start the fundraising has had his hair dyed pink and put into plaits courtesy of village hairdressers, Barnets.

The Ship Inn at Mundesley is also holding an early evening music and raffle and providing light refreshments on Saturday October 27 from 5.30pm-7.30pm.

The Mundesley Christmas Eve pageant, which has a collection during the pageant, will give half the amount raised to Hayley's fund. The other half will be donated to Cruse Bereavement.

Mr Bird said: 'It is lovely that people in the village are getting behind Hayley and helping her.'
