Following the success of Labour's Jeremy Corbyn and Clive Lewis at Glastonbury Festival this summer, Mr Freeman has revealed his idea to revive the spirit of Theresa May's party.

The 50-year-old said: 'Why is it just the left who have all the fun in politics?'

Called the Conservative Ideas Festival, the event is intended as a cross between Hay-on-Wye and grassroots for party activists.

Mr Freeman told the Financial Times he has raised £25,000 for a one-day event to be held in September.

The Conservatives annual party conference will be held at the start of October, with the festival scheduled to take place the weekend before.

Downing Street is reportedly aware of the festival, but has agreed it will be held outside the formal structures of the Conservative Party.

A team of more than 20 people, including 10 MPs, are organising the event, which will be invitation-only.
