Norfolk churches will be hosting creative worship activities as part of a global prayer movement.

Christians of all denominations will be gathering across the world for the Thy Kingdom Come event happening from May 25-June 4.

To mark the special religious celebration, St Francis Church in Heartsease, St Peter's Church in Reymerston, Norwich Cathedral, King's Lynn Minster and Great Yarmouth Minster, the Walsingham Shrine and St John's Church in Kirkley will be hosting different services.

The Bishop of Norwich, the Rt Revd Graham James, said: 'Jesus gave his followers a single prayer – the Lord's Prayer. The line thy kingdom come expresses a hope for a better world – more peaceful, joyful, loving. That's what God's kingdom is like. The Archbishops' initiative is to get the whole church to pray intensively over the next 10 days for a transformed world. It's an accident of timing that it now comes just before the General Election but what could be better? Prayer is about our deepest longings brought before God. I'm sure this is going to be a very special time.'

Last year more than 100,000 people joined with the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to pray during the 10 days between Ascension and Pentecost and this year even more are expected to participate.

Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev Justin Welby, said: 'Jesus prayed at the Last Supper that we, those who follow him, might be one that the world might believe. We are invited to make a lasting difference in our nations and in our world, by responding to his call to find a deep unity of purpose in prayer. It's not a Church of England thing, it's not an Anglican thing, it's a Christian thing.'

In the UK 34 special beacon services are taking place in cathedrals, and churches across the country have planned activities including prayer walks, candlelit services, street parties, psalm drumming, fireworks and prayer tepees.

On Wednesday, May 25, Norwich Cathedral, Kings Lynn Minster and Great Yarmouth Minster are all holding special beacon events.

There will be a live service on BBC1 at 10am on Pentecost Sunday, June 4, with the Archbishop of Canterbury.
