Patrick Weston and Chris Walsingham have launched Blue Skies Campsite on land owned by the Holkham estate, off the Stiffkey Road at Wells.

The pair are pledging to offer affordable holiday opportunities on a coast where the glamping boom has seen some sites charging hundreds a week.

Pitches start at £17 a night for two people and dogs being allowed to stay for free.

'We had the idea of a campsite in Wells and we spoke to Holkham about several sites,' said Mr Weston, who is also one of the driving forces behind the town's annual carnival.

'Then we got involved with the coastal communities people, who were working on a similar project. They backed our bid and then this site became available. We approached Holkham and they verey kindly said yes.'

Friends and family have helped tidy up the site, in a grassy dell next to the Wells and Walsingham Light Railway, which was previously a campsite called The Ranch. It has grass pitches, beach hut-themed showers - along with mangoes and no mangoes loos.

'That's where the man goes,' explained Mr Weston. 'And that's where no man goes.'

Melanie Harriss, chair of the Wells Coastal Communities Team, said: 'We are delighted that Blue Skies Campsite is now open. The need for more camping sites in Wells was brought to us as a project in the open meeting we had in October last year.

'We are pleased that the fruition of this project has come about with us, Holkham Estates, Patrick Weston and Chris Walsingham all working together.'

The first guests stayed in slightly less than ideal weather over the weekend. Within a 10-minute walk of the town centre, the site has a Coasthopper bus stop right outside.
