Members of the community looking to sustain local museums have gathered to celebrate the success of an ongoing project.
The Lowestoft Rising with Museums initiative has been developed by Lowestoft Rising in order to support and work with Lowestoft Museum, Lowestoft Maritime Museum and East Anglia Transport Museum.
Among its main purposes are to attract more volunteers to work at the three participating locations and generally increase awareness about the museums and their efforts to appreciate the region's rich history.
Funded by Arts Council England and managed by Lowestoft Rising's Taryn Dennis, the project got underway in November 2016 and will continue until March 2018, although it is hoped that the measures introduced will have a long-lasting effect and benefit the museums for years to come.
On Friday, Septempber 29, representatives from Lowestoft Rising, Arts Council England and each of the three participating groups convened at the maritime museum on Whapload Road to discuss the results that the scheme has yielded.
Lowestoft Rising change manager Phil Aves explained the premise of the project and how it has progressed over the last few months.
'The museums were actively aware that they struggling to get volunteers and it led to us helping them to form a partnership,' said Mr Aves.
'We are lucky to have Taryn as the project officer because she is so passionate about museums and has helped to bring them together with her brilliant ideas.
'The history of the town is varied and extremely interesting; the three museums have really embraced everything we've done.'
Since the project got underway, it has helped to bring in 17 more volunteers across the three museums and project officer Taryn Dennis emphasised how important it is to seek out further additions.
'We need to continue to bring in new volunteers with a wide skillset, people who could even work in numerous different locations.
'Volunteers make a crucial contribution to their local community and, through our work with schools, they are helping to educate the next generation.'
