It was a journey that took him from the sunny shores of the Mediterranean to snowy Alpine passes.

And now 25-year-old railway signalman Owen Bushell is safely back home after cycling just over 1,500 miles across Europe.

The epic trek from Narbonne in southern France took Mr Bushell, who lives in Trowse, 30 days and he has raised more than £1,000 for charities Barnardo's and Norwich Farmshare along the way.

He said he was delighted to have completed the month of cycling, camping and exploring some of Europe's highlights.

Mr Bushell said: 'It really was a proper adventure as I wild-camped for 17 nights, only stopping in three campsites.

'The kindness of the many people I met along the way was phenomenal, to receive such unconditional generosity and hospitality is truly humbling.'

Mr Bushell cycled without his phone, which he said meant he got to experience a lot more.

He said: 'It forces you to speak to people to solve problems which in turn creates the conditions for many fantastic and unexpected events to happen.'

Mr Bushell's kit included a tent, sleeping bag, roll-mat, cooking gear, clothes, small library of maps, a book and a journal.

His route took him through snow showers and rain in the French Alps, tropical 41-degree heat around the German city of Freiburg, along the Rhine valley and across the Netherlands, taking the Harwich ferry for the final leg through East Anglia.

Friends joined him at Diss, Trowse, and finally at the finishing point - Norwich City Hall - from where they made their way to a nearby pub for a celebratory drink.

Mr Bushell said: 'To share the end of my journey with so many people was really special and something to remember fondly for a long time.

'I was very pleased to arrive home and find that my fundraising for Norwich Farmshare and Barnardo's had increased significantly, with over £1,000 of the £2,000 target now reached.'
