The mother and brother of youngster who suffers with a life-limiting epileptic condition will be tackling Britain's highest mountain to raise funds for a charity support group.

Rebekah Hughes, 12, from Blickling Road in Aylsham, has had Dravet Syndrome - a severe form of epilepsy - since she was 11-months-old.

Since that time, Rebekah, who attends the Parkside School on College Road in Norwich, has suffered from hundreds of seizures, including being airlifted to hospital and spending time in intensive care.

Her condition also causes mobility problems and her blood oxygen levels need to be monitored during the day and night through a saturation monitor.

Her mother and full-time carer, Annabel Hughes, 46, is a trustee of Dravet Syndrome UK and will be one of dozens of people climbing up Ben Nevis in Scotland on June 17 in aid of the charity.

She will be joined by her son and twin brother of Rebekah, Henry - an Aylsham High School pupil - and the pair hope to raise £750 which is the cost of one saturation monitor.

Mrs Hughes said: 'We know firsthand that saturation monitors are lifesaving. We didn't have a saturation monitor at the beginning and we are so lucky to still have Rebekah with us. It is a vital piece of equipment.'

Organisers of the charity climb, which will involve just over 70 people, hope to raise over £20,000 for Dravet Syndrome UK which conducts medical research into the condition and supports families.

The mother-of-two added she was proud that her son wanted to take part.

'He is very active. At first I was anxious I would have to help him up the mountain but I think it will be the other way round.

'I'm not much of a walker but I do go to gym classes and you are always running around after two children.

'Reaching the top will be the best bit. I'm excited about doing the climb with Henry. We will create memories together,' Mrs Hughes added.

Her training will involved long walks around Norfolk but she admits finding hills in the county will be a challenge.

Ben Nevis is 1,345 metres above sea level.
