Norman Killeen and Mike Davies from Weeting CFR said they are 'over the moon' with the £1,627 raised through a fundraising day at the Flintknappers pub in Brandon.

The pair said the money will enable them to replace their current defibrillator and also purchase training equipment.

'We are gobsmacked,' said Mr Killeen, who has been a CFR for 13 years. 'We cannot thank the pub enough. When you think it was raised in one day it is absolutely brilliant. We are over the moon.'

Held on October 7, the charity day included an I'm A Celebrity style Bushtucker Challenge where people had to eat a number of unusual items including pigs' noses and porridge with cockroaches.

Patrons also had their backs, arm pits and eyebrows waxed in the name of charity.

One Flintknapper regular John 'Tango' Mail raised £400 by having his head shaved.

He said: 'I'm very pleased with it. The first responders are good for Brandon and it is nice to support a local charity.'

Landlady Jo Day and her husband Charlton took over the pub in April. She said she was pleased with the amount raised and the community spirit shown.

She said: 'It is a community pub so what better to pick then a local charity to raise money for.'

Currently Mr Killeen and Mr Davies are the only two Weeting CFR. A voluntary role, they cover an area which includes Brandon, Santon Downham, Methwold, Mundford, Feltwell, Hockwold, Lakenheath and Elveden.

So far this month they have racked up 139 hours between them.

Mr Davies, who has been a CFR for nearly two years, also has a full-time job as a driver for TNT.

'I love it and it is the best thing I have ever done,' said the 48-year-old who lives in Weeting. 'It is nice to give something back to your community.'

He added: 'I would encourage people to join as it is worthwhile.'

CFR are trained by the East of England Ambulance Service to attend certain types of emergency calls in the area where they live or work.
