Fakenham’s community fridge has had more than a tonne of food donated to it since it was launched.
The facility was opened on November 9 last year is one of six across the county designed to cut food waste and save families money.
The fridge is a partnership between Sainsbury’s Waste less, Save More initiative and North Norfolk District Council.
The council’s cabinet member for the environment, Annie Claussen-Reynolds said: “Most food waste in the UK - 4.1 million tonnes or 61pc - is avoidable and could have been eaten had it been better managed.”
The community fridge is at First Focus in Oak Street, and is open Monday to Thursday.
It is part of a wider ‘Fakenham Discovery Community’ project to raise awareness of food waste. Sainsbury’s is also running a ‘Zero Waste Kitchen Challenge’, with a workshop in Fakenham on February 13. See www.recyclefornorfolk.com for more details.
