A new exhibition explores the real lives of soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country, with Norwich students having uncovered the stories behind the names engraved on war memorials.

The Finding the Fallen: The Battle of the Somme exhibition is on display in the Millennium Library at The Forum until Friday.

The exhibition features research by supported learning students from City College Norwich and year 2 students from Norwich High School for Girls.

It forms part of The Forum's three year Norfolk in the First World War: Somme to Armistice project, funded through a £90,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant, honouring Norfolk's First World War heroes.

It highlights the students' research of soldiers from near their school and college who fought at the Battle of the Somme.

It includes a book of remembrance of the men of the Norfolk Regiment who died on the first day of the Somme and a photographic exhibition which reflects the disorder of war.

Working with local military historian Neil Storey, the students researched their local war memorial and uncovered the real lives and experiences behind the engraved names.

Students also learnt about conditions on the frontline and how life was changed back at home by examining first-hand accounts, letters, costumes and handling original objects.

Sarah Power, learning and events manager at The Forum said: 'It has been great to work with the students on this exhibition.

'They visited the Earlham Cemetery War Memorial and worked with Neil Storey to explore objects, photographs and documents related to local men who fought at the Battle of the Somme.

This exhibition shows their responses to this valuable learning experience.'

After its stint at The Forum, the exhibition be available to tour schools and community venues along with an accompanying film.
