Mystery surrounds reports a group of whales have been sighted in The Wash.
People posted seeing a group of four or five of the creatures off Old Hunstanton on social media this afternoon.
A number of sperm whales have washed up on the beach beside the village and at nearby Hunstanton in recent winters.
Staff at Hunstanton Sea Life Sanctuary went out to investigate at low tide.
Tonight duty manager Adam Makinson said: 'We believe it to be a case of mistaken identity. We believe it may have been a sandbank. There's been a lot of wind and high waves.
'Our team's been out there, they've spent a lot of time out there and they haven't seen a whale.'
Rescuers battled to save a 45ft sperm whale which washed up at nearby Hunstanton in January 2016. The creature was one of a number which washed up around The Wash and southern North Sea.
A week later, a second whale washed up at Old Hunstanton. Scientists are still investigating the strandings.
