A new nature reserve could be on the way for Hethersett thanks to the efforts of an environmental group.

The Hethersett Environmental Action Team is negotiating with a landowner to establish a new reserve at a meadowland location which has not yet been revealed.

The new reserve would be funded by the proceeds of an open garden event, which raised more than £880.

Dr Anne Edwards, a Hethersett parish councillor, said: '(The meadowland) is very wet in some areas and has some rare and very interesting ground flora including orchids, bedstraws and vetches.

'It also has many old tress and hedgerows and some ponds which are likely to support great crested newts.

'It has already been granted county wildlife status on the basis of its flora. Funds raised from the open gardens' event will be used to cover the legal costs of securing the land for Hethersett.'
