They are the people who often go without reward or recognition. But, without them, our communities would be much poorer.

Some of the unsung heroes from across the region took centre stage at the inaugural Stars of West Norfolk Awards. The magical ceremony saw finalists in our 11 categories, including Community Support of the Year, Unsung Hero of the Year and Team of the Year, honoured.

Specially selected for their dedication to the community, selfless carers, volunteers and workers who go above and beyond were all highlighted in a dazzling evening at the King's Lynn Alive Corn Exchange.

Mick Parker, managing director at Parker Communications and organiser of the EDP-backed awards, said: 'The Stars Awards are now 10 years old: we started in Suffolk 10 years ago and this was the first year in West Norfolk. People really, really love the awards.

'Local businesses get involved where we have established the awards in most parts of East Anglia and the event has a tremendous reputation.

'The formula we have works so well and recognises people who don't expect recognition. It was a very, very emotional evening. Without these people in the community we would be so much poorer.'

David Bale, chief reporter in West Norfolk, who was guest speaker at the event, said: 'These are the people within our communities who selflessly commit time, effort, courage and care – without a thought for themselves. They are real heroes and heroines who, until recently, have not been recognised and rewarded.'

Every nomination from this year's Stars of West Norfolk Awards, not just the finalists, will be put forward to the Stars of Norfolk judges with the very real possibility of becoming a finalist in those awards to be held in Norwich on December 8.

Don't miss Tuesday's paper for a special four-page report on the awards.
