Millfield Primary School in North Walsham was overjoyed to find, for the sixth year running, that some of their pupils had won prizes for the International Minimus Mythology Competition.

Twenty-one pupils from years 5 and 6, who are learning Latin, entered this year's competition with various entries in art or creative writing.

Every year the entries had either born a winner or a runner-up but this year Millfield was delighted to learn they had four runners-up prizes and a 'special prize' awarded.

They were also awarded a 'whole school prize (runners-up)' for the best set of entries.

The three art category prizes went to Xi Wang, James Weston and Isla Harrison. Anya Quinn won a runners-up prize in the creative writing category for a play script, which was written using both Latin and English.

The judges commented on how 'detailed, well thought out and sophisticated' the play script was.

Helen Maidment won a special prize in creative writing, for her story told from many perspectives of Demeter and Persephone. The judges described it as 'a very well-written piece'. They added: 'A complex piece with sophisticated vocabulary which is well used and each character has a distinctive voice.'

Mrs Price, who teaches Latin at the school, said: 'I am so proud of everyone that entered the competition and the high standard of entries this year.

'The children absolutely love learning Latin and it is great to see that their enthusiasm has flowed in their entries and the judges have recognised this.

'Well done, I can't wait to see what you produce next year!'
