Since he lost his mother to ovarian cancer three years ago, Jonathan James has been determined to do her proud.

And yesterday, after securing a place at Cambridge University, he will have surely done just that.

The Fakenham Sixth Form College student achieved four A*s - in biology, chemistry, physics and maths and will be studying medicine at Cambridge.

While preparing for his exams, Mr James, from Great Ryburgh, also faced serious concerns for his brother, Sam, who was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

He said: 'Mum died when I was doing my GCSEs. It was really difficult - but I've just wanted to make her proud.

'I was worried for my brother and I just threw myself into my studies as an escape. Fortunately Sam has made a good recovery.

'I had to rely on the support of my family and the college, who were amazing. I couldn't have done it without them.'
