The behaviour of a teacher who had inappropriate relationships with pupils and was banned from the classroom was never reported to the police, it has emerged.

Both Norfolk and Sussex police said they had received no allegations about Nathan Waring, 37, who was banned from teaching by the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) this month after incidents at Gresham's School in Holt, and St Bede's Prep School, in Eastbourne.

The NCTL found that Mr Waring, who taught at St Bede's from 2004 to 2007 and was Gresham's director of music from 2008 to 2015:

• Had an 'inappropriate relationship' with a girl aged 12 at St Bede's, which saw him kiss and touch her inappropriately

• Engaged in 'inappropriate and/or flirtatious behaviour' with a pupil at Gresham's

• Arranged to meet the pupil out of school on two occasions, when he told colleagues he was at a meeting and picking up dry cleaning

• Was convicted of drink driving while returning to her birthday party.

Gresham's School said it did not report Mr Waring - who resigned in 2015 - to the police, because he 'presented no evidence of criminal behaviour or actions'.

But the school did refer his behaviour to the local authority designated officer (Lado) at Norfolk County Council, who deals with allegations.

When claims about the incidents at St Bede's emerged one month into his role at Gresham's, Mr Waring was suspended while it was investigated. The allegations were later dropped and he returned to school, though Gresham's created precautionary rules on behaviour with pupils. The school said it referred new concerns about Mr Waring to the Lado and NCTL in September 2015.

'Mr Waring was immediately suspended from his post and resigned shortly afterwards,' the school said. But the concerns were never reported to the police.

When asked why, and what measures the Lado takes, Norfolk County Council said: 'We cannot comment on a specific cases however we can confirm that our Lado procedures work to national guidelines.'

The NCTL report said the school had provided its panel with a 'chronology of child protection concerns' relating to Mr Waring.

The school said it has a safeguarding lead, a comprehensive child protection and safeguarding policy in place and worked with the council's children's services team.
