A landlady has said it was fortunate nobody was hurt after a car crashed into the side of her pub.

At around 7.45pm on Thursday, the Wheelwrights Arms on Beccles Road in Gorleston was disrupted by an “almighty bang”, which sent regulars leaping from their seats.

The commotion was caused by a silver sports car, which had collided with the front wall of the pub, before heading away towards Church Road.

Debbie Beavers, pub landlady said: “I heard an almighty bang and originally thought there had been an accident on the road outside.

“However, one of our regulars soon realised the car had crashed into the pub itself - when I went out to check on it the car roared away. It was in quite a bad way but they still sped off.”

The smash caused damage to the building’s brickwork leaving Mrs Beavers, who has been at the pub since 2002, counting the cost of repairs - although fortunately it was not as bad as it could have been.

Mrs Beavers added: “The crash happened right where everybody goes to smoke, so it is very lucky nobody was out there at the time. Somebody could have been killed.

“But what frustrates me most is that the people in the car didn’t stop. If they’d have come in, told me what had happened and apologised I would have just been thankful nobody was hurt, but they just left.

“It shows no respect or consideration for other people’s property whatsoever.”

It is the third time since Mrs Beavers has been landlady at the pub that a vehicle has crashed into it, including an occasion six years ago when a car took out the wall of its car park.

Police have since confirmed two men have been arrested in relation to the incident, both aged in their 30s.

It is not clear at this stage which of the men was driving at the time, but both have been arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol.

One of the men was also arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking.
