A supermarket in Wells has reopened following a dramatic ram raid that took place in the early hours of Monday morning.
There was extensive damage to the Co-op store on Polka Road after suspects smashed through one of the store's walls using a JCB teleporter and removed a cash machine from within the building.
Repairs to the wall and a police investigation meant the store had to be closed throughout the day on Monday but it has now reopened and is operating as normal.
A spokesperson for Central England Co-operative said: 'Our Wells food store, in Polka Road, has now reopened following an incident yesterday.
'We would like to thank customers and colleagues for their support and patience while we helped police with their investigations and ensured that the building was structurally secure.
'The wall has been repaired temporarily and full repairs will take place as a matter of urgency. The temporary repairs pose no risk.'
Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which took place at around 3am and officers are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone with information.
The thieves are believed to have loaded the stolen ATM machine into a 4x4 truck, which fled the scene. A dark coloured hatchback vehicle may have also been used.
A police spokesperson said: 'Our investigation is continuing, the teleporter that was used in the crime was left at scene and we have seized for forensic purposes.'
The teleporter is owned by the Norfolk-based hire company called Mooney in Hockering.
A spokesman said that it had been hired by one of their customers and stolen from a building site. He added that he did not yet know how or what damage was done during the theft.
Wells Town Council clerk Greg Hewitt said: 'It is infuriating that the actions of a few mindless individuals have caused so much damage and inconvenience for the Co-op and local residents.
'Thankfully, incidents of this nature are very rare in Wells'
