Police are appealing for information after two men called at an elderly man's house in Cromer claiming to be detectives.

The man was with a friend at his home on Mill Road when the pair entered through a back door at about 6.45pm on Sunday December 9.

The men said they were detectives and were investigating a theft of cash from his house, and told the man to go upstairs to check if any of his possessions were missing.

He refused and asked to see ID, one of the men held out a card but did not hold it still and nothing genuine was produced. The man continued to refuse to leave the room and to challenge the men, and when he told them he would call police they left through the back door. Nothing was stolen.

The first man is described as white, large, in his early to mid 30s, five foot six inches tall, with collar-length light brown hair and was wearing a short jacket, a light-coloured shirt and possibly a light brown jumper.

The second man was white, very slim, five foot six inches tall with a strong jawline and was dressed smartly in a knee-length mottled grey overcoat.

Police want to speak to anyone who may have seen the men in Cromer yesterday evening, or anyone who recognises them. Contact DC Debbie Johnston at Operation RADAR on 101.

North Norfolk policing commander, Superintendent Carl Edwards, said: 'We congratulate the occupant on his vigilance and for asking to see identification. Police officers calling at a property to carry out a burglary inquiry would wait to be admitted and show photographic identification. Anyone still unsure about the identity of a caller at their home claiming to be a police officer can call 101 to verify they are genuine.'
