A wanted man was arrested in Norwich after fleeing from officers in his vehicle before abandoning it and trying to get away on foot.

A Norfolk police spokesperson said the man in his 20s failed to stop his grey Peugeot 206 while driving along Old Palace Road earlier today (Tuesday).

The spokesperson said the man later brought the car to a halt before jumping out and fleeing on foot.

'Officers caught up with him at Westwick Street and the fire service was called as he was on the river wall but officers managed to apprehend him before he got into the river.'

The spokesperson said the man had been detained at around 11.35am.

'He has been arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, driving without insurance and on suspicion of assault connected to an incident in July.'

The man is in police custody in Wymondham. The Norfolk fire service said appliances from Carrow, Sprowston and Earlham had assisted police on Westwick Street.
