Meanwhile, one of Norwich's biggest nightclubs has announced it is setting up a 'safe haven' for drunken revellers who need help.

Ibish Peri, director of Mercy on Prince of Wales Road, said people can take refuge in the neighbouring Rocco's bar on Saturday night.

The bar will provide access to first aid, water and toilets from 9pm onwards.

Mr Peri said the SOS bus, which provides support to people at night, will also be located near the club on Saint Faiths Lane.

He added: 'It is one of the busiest nights of the year and we are expecting thousands to come into the city.

'With that you can expect a few people who will drink too much.

'We are opening up Rocco's and making it a safe haven where people can take some refuge and be looked after by first aiders.

'The more we can do to relieve pressure off local authorities and the ambulance service, the better.'

Norfolk Police said extra officers will be sent to areas including Tombland, Riverside and Prince of Wales Road in what is 'likely' to be a busy weekend.

Police warned people intent on causing trouble can expect to be dealt with 'robustly' and even banned from clubs and pubs.

'The message to people is simple, enjoy yourselves and have a good time, but do so responsibly by knowing your limits and staying with friends,' the spokesman said.

'People coming to the city intent on causing trouble can expect to be dealt with robustly and could find themselves banned from pubs and clubs.

'Officers have the power to impose strict conditions on anyone arrested or charged with offences, including banning people from licensed premises and specified areas of the city.'

Police will be working closely with bars and clubs to support the vulnerable and ensure people get home safely.

Norfolk Constabulary has also urged people to act responsibly on Halloween night.

It said it typically received an additional 100 calls on October 31 compared to a typical night that month.

In 2016, it received 543 calls on its 999 and 101 numbers that evening. Of those, 296 were made between 5pm and 11.59pm.
