A woman lost a tooth and had to have three metal plates inserted in her fractured jaw after an attack in Norwich.

Malaki Morgan punched the woman to the floor during a scuffle on Adelaide Street in the early hours, leaving her unconscious, Norwich Crown Court heard.

Daniel Taylor, prosecuting, said the woman had to be taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital where she underwent surgery the next day and had the metal plates inserted.

Mr Taylor said that Morgan, 30, and the victim knew each other and had been sharing a lift home following a night out before the incident happened shortly before 4.30am.

He said: 'It was the latter punch which caused the serious injury sustained by this young lady in the early hours of the morning in question.'

Morgan, of Waddington Street, Norwich, had been due to stand trial but before a jury was sworn in he changed his plea and admitted causing grievous bodily harm to the woman on April 22 this year.

John Morgans, for Morgan, said the plea was offered on a written basis, which had been lodged with the court and agreed with the prosecution.

Judge Maureen Bacon remanded Morgan in custody but ordered report, saying: 'I need to have full information about the potential danger you pose.'

She adjourned sentence until Friday, November 10.

Judge Bacon also wanted an update on the impact statement from the victim, who had attended court for the trial, to see how well she had recovered from her injuries and find out if she had undergone any dental work to replace the lost tooth.

She said it would 'no doubt be worrisome' as well as expensive for the victim.

She added: 'One hopes post surgery that her injury is settling down.'

Judge Bacon added that the victim's sister was also present during the assault and said she noted that she had also been 'extremely distressed and hysterical' by what she had seen happen to her sister.
