A Norwich man was part of an 'organised' gang of eight to be jailed for more than 20 years after cannabis worth between £5m and £6m was seized by police targeting the distribution of drugs between Norfolk and Suffolk.

In total, about two tonnes of cannabis was recovered as part of an operation carried out by specialist investigative officers from the Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU).

Yesterday, Jonathan Bird, 38, from Longdell Hill, Norwich, was sentenced to four years and three months in prison at Ipswich Crown Court after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply class B drugs, possession of a weapon and money laundering.

Kerr John Smith, 52, from Lawrence Place, Foxley, near Bawdeswell, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply class B drugs and was sentenced to three-and-a-half years.

They were both part of an organised gang jailed for a total of 22 years in prison after police received intelligence they were involved in the distribution of high quality herbal and resinous cannabis through the two counties.
