A neighbour has expressed their shock at the discovery of a cache of weapons including four guns and a grenade on a Norwich estate as the occupant of the address used to take her bins out.

Officers were called to Clifton Street in the city on Wednesday around 3pm following reports a man had made verbal threats to another resident.

Police attended and a 23-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and taken to Wymondham Police Investigation Centre where he remains in custody.

Following the arrest police searched the man's property and discovered four firearms and a grenade.

Bomb disposal specialists from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal attended the incident and the firearms were confirmed as deactivated.

One neighbour, 26, who asked not be named, said: 'There were seven police cars with dogs and police with guns came out.

'There was a lady there who was shouting and swearing.'

Another resident, in her 60s, said life on the street in the last month has been 'really dreadful'.

'Earlier this month the chap who lives opposite me had armed police appear suddenly,' she said. 'A detective came into my house and watched from the kitchen window. They asked me to go into the bathroom in case anything went off. I have lived here since 2000 and in the last two or three months the place has got worse and worse.

'The police have definitely been coping with what is going on around here. There have been so many of them about it makes you wonder where they all come from.

'Normally it is very quiet so it surprises me to hear about the guns. He has a couple of times put my rubbish bags out for me. I couldn't fault him.'

A neighbour living on Russell Street, 70, said: 'Where would you even get a grenade from? It is quite a scary thing.

'Everybody was out while it was going on wondering what was happening. You don't often see armed police around here. I came home from walking my dog and the whole street was flooded with police vehicles.'

The find comes after a controlled explosion was carried out in Hellesdon at the weekend after a man fished a grenade out of the River Wensum while he was 'magnet fishing'.

It is believed it dated back to the Second World War.
