A Liberal Democrat candidate for an upcoming by-election in North Walsham was suspended from the local party on Tuesday evening.

Glenn Burrows, of Princes Street in North Walsham, was charged in June with one count of obtaining services dishonestly, under the Fraud Act, and one count of acquiring criminal property.

The 32-year old has been bailed to appear at Norwich Magistrates' Court on August 4.

The allegations relate to a company selling set-top boxes for television sets.

Mr Burrows is a Liberal Democrat candidate for a by-election this Thursday (July 20) to North Walsham Town Council's West Ward.

But he was suspended by the Liberal Democrats on Tuesday when the party became aware of the charge.

Sarah Butikofer, leader of the Liberal Democrats at North Norfolk District Council, said: 'The local party have suspended the candidate until a thorough investigation can be completed.'

The other by-election candidates are Elaine Addison (Labour), Rob Scammell (Liberal Democrat) and Andy Davidson (Independent).

•UPDATE THURSDAY JULY 20: Mr Burrows is still on the ballot papers for the by-election as a Liberal Democrat candidate as his suspension from the local party came after the nomination date for candidates.
