A former music teacher has appeared in court charged with 16 counts of historic child sex offences.

Paul Johnson, of Mount Street, King's Lynn, appeared in Lynn magistrates' court on Thursday, January 25.

The 87-year-old only spoke to confirm his name, age, address and nationality.

He is charged with 16 counts of indecent assault on boys under the age of 16 years.

Prosecutor Fergus Harold said the offences took place in the 1970s and 1980s against boys aged between 13 and 16-years-old, when Johnson was a music teacher at various schools.

He added that the matter was not suitable to be dealt with in the magistrates' court.

Chairman of the bench Jean Meldrum said: 'The bench declines jurisdiction in this matter.'

Speaking to the defendant, Ms Meldrum said the matter will be sent to Norwich Crown Court to be heard on Thursday, February 22.

She released Johnson on unconditional bail.
