A drug addict with 56 convictions for 137 offences 'overdosed' when he found more than 100 wraps of Class A drugs and was arrested in hospital.

Kevin Killick, 42, of Ber Street in Norwich, turned up at A&E on October 14 last year with what appeared to be a 'severe head injury', Norwich Crown Court heard.

Richard Hutchings, prosecuting, told the court: 'Because of his state hospital staff looked through his property to identify him and found several wraps of brown and white powder.

'Police officers were called to the hospital, the defendant was arrested and his property searched. 22 wraps of cocaine and 79 wraps of heroin were found. The value of the drugs hasn't been ascertained.

'When the defendant had recovered from his injury he was asked questions by police officers and said he had found the bag of drugs. He states there was a large amount of cash as well as the drugs.

'It is believed the injury to his head was caused by him smoking some wraps of the drugs. He did not know whose the drugs were. He intended to keep all the cash and smoke all the drugs. He was an addict and wanted the drugs for himself. It was quite apparent to the hospital staff he was intoxicated by drugs.

'He has 56 convictions for 137 offences, primarily for dishonesty and assault.'

Judge Stephen Holt gave Killick one month in prison. As he has served five months on remand, he was released immediately.

'This is a typical offending list of someone addicted to drugs,' he said. 'Perhaps you are fortunate the prosecution have taken the view they have.

'You had found the drugs, effectively overdosed on them, fallen over and caused the injury. It is entirely down to you if you continue to use Class A drugs. If you do we will see you again.'

What remains of the drugs will be forfeited and destroyed.
