Michael White has worked for Myhills Pet and Garden in Watton - which took over from Julnes & Son in 2001 - for 47 years and is retiring.

And Colin Cator is set to celebrate his 50th year at the shop by reducing his hours to a couple of days a week.

Mr White, who lives in Scoulton, spent three years in the building trade before joining Julnes & Son in 1970 aged 18.

The 65-year-old said he is looking to spend time holiday around the country and spending time in his garden.

'It will be nice to do what I want and when I want really,' he said. 'It is quite scary really. It is going to be strange but it is a new beginning I suppose.

'I have seen a lot of staff come and go over the years. I have had some good colleague to work with and we have got on as a good team. And there have been a lot of customers who have been coming in for years who are like old friends.'

Joining Julnes & Son straight out of school as a 16-year-old, Mr Cator will spend his free time watching horse racing and fishing.

Two other staff members are also long-term servants.

Glennis Bristow is closing in on 39 years and store manager David Squires has worked at the shop on the high street for 46 years.

Mr Squires, who is 61 and from Norwich, said he enjoys working at the hardware store because of the 'different types of people you meet'.

He added: 'Some of the people we have known for years. I don't think there are many places now where four members of staff have worked this many years at the same place.'

A surprise party was held by staff to celebrate the pairs achievements and retirement.

Mr White said: 'It was the surprise of my life.'

He added: 'Initially when I first started working I was more of an outside person. Overall I have enjoyed it or I would not have stayed as long.

'Most of the customers are a pleasure to work with. Generally it has been good.

'It has been interesting and nice to meet different people.'
