Firefighters rescue pair after man holds his brother's head out of the water

Two brothers had a lucky escape when a car ended-up in a ditch full of water on the outskirts of Wisbech.

Fire crews arrived to find the men trapped upside-down in their car and one of them holding his brother's head up and out of the water.

Emergency services were called around 1.20pm yesterday when the car went into a dyke off Burrettgate Road.

Norfolk's Asst Ch fire officer Roy Harold was driving on the nearby A47 when he heard the call come in.

'I don't normally go out on calls very much now, but I heard from the tone of voice of the crews out there that this was serious and I was nearby, so I put the blue lights on and went over to help,' he said.

Mr Harold said when he arrived a crew from Wisbech was already at the scene and trying to force open the doors of the saloon car.

'When they got the door open we saw two very white, very frightened faces upside-down looking at us. One man was holding the head of his brother above the water,' said Mr Harold.

Three fire crews were sent from Wisbech, Terrington St Clement and King's Lynn.

A man has since been charged with being over the legal drink-drive limit and is due to appear before King's Lynn magistrates on January 21.
