It is decades since the heyday of the mods and rockers, known for violent clashes when the opposing factions met in England's seaside towns.

And now the organisers of an event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the leather-clad, scooter-riding subcultures have met a common foe in a Norfolk council.

Joanna Daines, who has arranged the meet-up of fellow enthusiasts on Great Yarmouth's seafront next to the Joyland Diner for the May bank holiday has been left shocked after receiving a bill for hundreds of pounds.

It follows Great Yarmouth Borough Council introducing new fees on April 1, 2024, for the use of council-owned land as part of efforts to plug a £2.2m deficit.

She has been forced to stump up £425 for it to go ahead, which she is having to pay out of pocket for what is a non-profit, free event.

"I do not understand why they are charging us. We are bringing in money to the town and it is a free community event," she said.

"These events are happening all over the country, other places don't charge.

"The meet-up has been running for 20 years but this is the first time I have taken over organising it. It was too late to cancel and I did not know about the changes until recently.

"Hopefully it will be a success and we can return next year."

It is the second group that has complained about the new policy.

In March, East Coast Pirates, a classic car event, announced it has to stop its classic car meet-ups due to it now being unaffordable.

A spokesman for GYBC said: "The fee is calculated according to the size of the event and which classification it falls into.

"If there are any concerns or queries, we would urge the event organiser to make contact with the council to discuss the situation."

The event takes place between 11am and 5pm on Monday, May 6 on the Marine Parade green.
