The Goodshed in Burnham Market is brimming with history – and offers a “rare opportunity” as it hits the market with Sowerbys at £1,850,000.

The five-bedroom property was originally built in 1866 as the principal goods storage shed for the West Norfolk Junction Line between Heacham and Wells-next-the-Sea.

Burnham Market was the largest and busiest of the line’s stations until the floods of 1953 brought about its early demise.

Thereafter the building was well-maintained and used as a storage shed for traction engines until 1998, when it was acquired by the current owners who converted it into their main home.

Sowerbys said the entrance of The Goodshed “has all the proportions of a barn conversion with its double height”, while the south-facing aspect floods the space with natural light.

Of particular interest is the delicate parquet flooring which was acquired from the bowling alley at nearby RAF Sculthorpe when the American airbase closed in 1992.

There is a substantial amount of living and entertaining space on the ground floor, including a large kitchen, family dining room and drawing room – which was originally used as a snooker room when the current owners lived in the property.

Completing the ground floor are a study, snug, utility room and guest WC.

Upstairs there are five double bedrooms, with en suites to the two largest. The other three share a very generous family bathroom.

Outside, the garden is completely enclosed and totally private, with electric gates providing security. It is mostly laid to lawn with patio areas to the front and back.

There is plenty of tarmacked off-street parking, as well as a separate brick-built double garage.

The Goodshed has been occupied on a long-term let for several years, so it is now in need of a little cosmetic updating – but opportunities to own such an iconic building are always rare, said Sowerbys.

Burnham Market is an elegant and sought-after village offering a range of boutique shops, restaurants and delis, as well as the world-famous horse trials.

Some of the finest homes on the north Norfolk coast are located in the village and its smaller siblings – Burnham Deepdale, Burnham Norton, Burnham Overy Staithe and Burnham Thorpe – the latter being the historic home of Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson.
