Adjustments have been made to a Drayton road after concerns that recent changes were to blame for five crashes in three weeks.

The traffic calming measures on Hall Lane were installed and the speed limit cut three weeks ago in an attempt to head off congestion for when the Northern Distributor Road (NDR) opens.

And in the three weeks since the chicanes were introduced and the speed limit reduced from 40mph to 30mph, five crashes have occurred on the stretch of road.

Drayton Parish Council called for an urgent onsite meeting with Norfolk County Council to resolve the issues and this was held on Monday.

Following this meeting the County Council agreed to make some changes to the traffic calming measures. The positioning of the new and existing 30mph signs will be improved and extra signs will be put up.

The chicanes and road narrowings will be made more visible, initially using cones, before permanent bollards at the narrowings and improved reflectors on the existing wooden posts are installed.

John Birchall, community liaison officer for the NDR project, said other measures, such as white lining, will also be considered after reviewing the recommendations of the routine safety audit that has been carried out on the scheme.

He also addressed concerns about who has priority at the chicanes and whether this should be clarified by making traffic from one direction give way. But cyclists have also complained that fails to give them space through the chicanes.

He added: 'Given the current pressure on the lane will ease considerably when Reepham Road and the southern section of Drayton Lane reopen at the end of next week, the County Council is not proposing to make any further changes at this stage.

'A further safety review of the scheme will be carried out once Reepham Road has reopened and traffic is joining Hall Lane from the Drayton Lane at the new mini-roundabout.'

The work on the road took five weeks to complete at a cost of approximately £75,000 and involved the construction of chicanes, junction alterations and a mini-roundabout. Sections of road have also been narrowed to discourage lorries and HGVs using the route.
