Drivers have been urged to take extra care on the region's roads as the days get shorter and colder as winter arrives.

Bosses at the East of England Ambulance Service have made the plea as it backs road safety week, run by charity Brake, which runs until Sunday under the banner of 'Speed down save lives'.

The service attended more than 5,000 traffic crashes last winter, compared to 5,654 the previous year - a decrease of 10pc. There 817 in Norfolk, 622 in Suffolk and 791 in Cambridgeshire.

Road users are being urged to take the following advice:

• Stick to speed limits and drive to the road conditions

• Leave an appropriate distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead

• Give yourself extra time to get to your destination, particularly in icy conditions

• Avoid distractions to maintain your full concentration whilst driving in winter conditions

• Never drink and drive and make plans in advance to get home if out partying this winter

• Wear hi-visibility clothing and use lights if walking or cycling in the dark
