Pitched battles are expected in the streets when the vikings invade Sheringham next month.

And children of all ages are being invited to take part in a shield-making workshop to prepare for their arrival.

Sheringham Viking Festival will take place in the seaside resort on Saturday, February 18.

It culminates with a torch-lit parade through town and burning of the Viking longboat on the beach.

The festivities get underway with a shield-making workshop in Oddfellows Hall, Sheringham, on Saturday, February 11, from 11am, when final touches will be put to the Longboat under the expert guidance of local artist Colin Seal.

He said: 'I find it very rewarding to see young people of our community getting involved in projects such as this where they can be appreciated for what they can do.'

A beacon will be lit on the Leas to mark the main event the following week when a special film on the Vikings will be shown at the Mo museum throughout the day.

Street battles will take place outside Oddfellows Hall at 1pm and 4pm.

The Parade will set off from Ottendorf Green at 6pm, with the burning of the ship taking place on the west promenade beach.

Anyone who would like to sponsor a shield of the Viking longship should contact Colin on 01263 823261 or 07879 681227.
