If, like us, your children have worn out the Babe DVD with too many viewings, this on-stage version of Babe the Sheep Pig at Norwich Theatre Royal might be just the ticket to save you from some Easter blues.
Of course, the film is a hard act to follow. The mixture of technical devices, including the stunning animatronics, provide a near perfect illusion. Here, the pig and his friends are cunningly brought to life with skilled puppetry and wonderful costumes, but it's obviously not the same.
Fortunately, the visual language director Michael Fentiman choses is strong enough to take you away from thoughts of Babe's screen past. The chief storytellers are a bunch of lop eared, wobbly bottomed sheep who can barely squeeze through gates, and the farm yard is full of quirky characters and cleverly operated devices (the wheely ducks get my top billing.)
Don't miss this treat, it's a holiday hoot.
