Mike Stonard of the Highways committee says 'There's no evidence of an increased accident risk' from opening up pedestrianised areas to cyclists (September 21).

I find that hard to believe, given the current risk must be zero as bikes are not allowed so even one accident is an increase?

The committee thinks cyclists and pedestrians can co-exist in the same space without problems. I wonder why then they spent all that money in the past on cyclelanes. They have urged 'gentle cycling' rather than rules and regulations.

The committee says we shouldn't worry because accidents between pedestrians and cyclists are 'very rare'. Try telling that to the widower of the woman recently killed by a cyclist in London.
