One reader shares some Army diary entries from his time spent on a Norfolk beach.

Reading the article of a bomb find at Winterton, this reminded me of the time when I was a member of the Royal Norfolk Regiment Corps, training at Nelson Barracks, Norwich.

I kept a diary of my three years of Army life and have located the following entries.

Our final exercise started on Friday, August 17, 1945. Our platoon went by lorry to the Winterton battle area, sleeping in a barn overnight. We did two one-mile battle courses, firing 30 rounds on a rifle and 30 rounds on a Bren machine gun, fired four explosive and six smoke bombs on a two inch mortar at targets over the beach out to sea. Threw one hand grenade and fired 20 rounds on a Sten gun on a close-quarter fighting course.

On sentry duty on the beach during the afternoon and on patrol at night, fired five rounds on my rifle 'tracers' out to sea targets.

Saturday, August 18, 1945, did some individual stalking exercises, also fired two HE (high explosive) bombs on the PIAT gun (Personnel Infantry tank gun) out to sea (could be this type of bomb found).

In the evening we went to the village hall and local people gave us tea, coffee and cakes etc, a nice surprise. On Sunday, August 19, 1945 we came back to the barracks by lorries.

This was the only time we went to Winterton for battle training.
