Plans for a ‘car-free’ development on a pocket of land behind existing homes were approved despite opposition from neighbours.

The site is former Newtown Motors car workshop in Ormond Road, Great Yarmouth and is surrounded by terraced housing.

It can only be accessed via a narrow alleyway which neighbour’s complained was too small for vehicles.

Permission was granted by Great Yarmouth Borough Council’s planning committee on the condition that the alleyway be permanently closed to road traffic once construction has finished and prior to the first householders move in.

The two-bedroom homes will not have parking spaces and it was acknowledged it would likely lead to an increase in the number of cars parking in the street.

As the site cannot easily be accessed by a fire engine, Norfolk Fire and Rescue recommended that the new buildings have sprinkler systems installed.
