Much-loved TV and storybook character Thomas the Tank Engine peep-peeped his way along the tracks at the North Norfolk Railway this weekend, as part of one of the attraction's most popular annual events for youngsters.

The Day Out With Thomas weekend, which runs until Monday, was first hosted by the Poppy Line more than 20 years ago.

It was re-introduced in 2012 after a break, and has since attracted up to 6,000 visitors a year.

Parents, grandparents and youngsters had a chance to meet Thomas's pal Percy at Sheringham station, before setting off to Weybourne, where they could chat to the Fat Controller, see Scottish goods engine Douglas and take a trip on Thomas – a a 35-tonne steam locomotive transported to Sheringham on the back of a lorry from the East Anglian Railway Museum at Colchester.

Other attractions included a bouncy castle, the station's model railway and an 'imagination station' run by members of the Poppy Line education department, who invited young visitors to follow a treasure trail, play Thomas-themed games and listen to stories about the little engine and his pals.

Also on hand to entertain Thomas fans were Norfolk-based children's entertainers Steve Spud and Dave Doughnut, who performed magic tricks and sang songs dressed as the Fat Controller's station cleaners Rusty and Dusty.

North Norfolk Railway general manager Andrew Munden said the event had proved a real hit with young and old alike.

'It has gone very well and it is lovely to see lots of happy smiling faces on mums, dads and children,' he said.

Anne Houghton, who took the train to Weybourne with her two-year-old son Albert said the event was a 'fantastic' experience for young children.

'There is loads to do,' she added. 'Albert absolutely loved riding on Thomas and Percy and really enjoyed being able to look out of the window at the tracks and the other trains.'
