The bank has been left short-staffed by illness at its Surrey Street branch and has been serving customers at its Gentleman's Walk branch instead.

Banks must maintain certain staffing levels for safety and security purposes, and it is understood Lloyds chose to have one branch offering a full service rather than two branches with a reduced service.

A spokesman for Lloyds Bank said: 'The Lloyds Bank branch on Surrey Street will open as normal from Monday, April 24.

'We're really sorry for the reduced opening hours this week. The nearby Gentleman's Walk branch, which is a short walk away, is the best alternative option for customers until Monday.'

Customers of the bank said it is the second time in a month the branch has been closed unexpectedly.
