Businesses can stand still and survive – but those that really thrive are the ones which continually look to innovate and develop.

The signs are there for all to see that the economy is picking up, with growth forecasts continually being revised upwards.

It was the downturn which inspired many Norfolk businesses to look seriously at business development and find ways to source new products and markets. But innovation will be equally crucial to those looking to seize the opportunities presented by the recovery.

It is that spirit which the Business Development Award seeks to celebrate. Sponsored by Howes Percival this popular EDP Business Awards category has traditionally highlighted those firms whose pioneering spirit has helped them secure further success.

Andrew Barnes, senior partner at Howes Percival, said: 'We may all hope that times of opportunity are returning given the greater confidence that has come with the easing of the global, and our national, economic ills. However, because of the recession the world has changed and the result in all sectors of business is that competition is even more rife than ever and, as a general rule, there is pressure to provide much more value than before and for a price that if not less will remain static. Growth is the mantra for us all but to achieve the increased sales at the reasonable margin which we all need we have to focus strongly on the development of our own businesses if we are to take advantage of the new climate and avoid getting left behind.'
