The sounds of the sixties rocked Lowestoft town centre today (Monday).

As the regional premiere of popular musical Carnaby Street hits Lowestoft next month, the town centre was transformed into a slice of 1960s London this lunchtime in promoting the show.

Dancers, an original red London Routemaster Bus, London cab and a glistening scooter lined up in the main street as The Beatles classic Twist and Shout echoed out.

With the production currently touring the UK and an album of songs featured in the show currently at number three in the music charts, Carnaby Street - The Musical will be at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft for one week from May 27.

Featuring more than 30 classic hits from a golden era, along with comedy and dance, producer Carl Leighton-Pope explained how the hit show came to the stage.

After being given his first taste of the music business when he started work at London's famous Marquee Club in the early sixties, Mr Leighton-Pope admitted that working there changed his life as the likes of the Yardbirds with Eric Clapton, Manfred Mann and The Who were all performing.

Mr Leighton-Pope - who lived in Carnaby Street when he was 18 - has since gone on to sign numerous music superstars including Dire Straits, Simple Minds, Bryan Adams and his most recent client, Michael Bublé, who is now selling out arenas throughout the world.

Describing Carnaby Street - The Musical, which is set between 1964 and 1968 on the street itself and at The Marquee Club where he worked, Mr Leighton-Pope said: 'I wanted this to be a load of fun and with the show it takes you back to the 1960s and the summer of love. The people of Lowestoft need to bring their dancing shoes and singing voices along with them.'

With a cast that includes Verity Rushworth, who played Donna Windsor in Emmerdale, and Aaron Sidwell who played Steven Beale in Eastenders, Carnaby Street will be performed at the Marina from Monday, May 27 to Saturday, June 1 nightly at 7.30pm with matinees on the Wednesday and Saturday at 2.30pm.

Martin Halliday, chief executive of the Marina Theatre, said: 'We are thrilled that Carnaby Street is coming to Lowestoft. It is the regional premiere and follows Dreamboats and Petticoats and Save The Last Dance For Me which we've brought to the Lowestoft audiences straight from the West End.

'If they loved Dreamboats and Petticoats they will adore this.'
