An airline has scrapped a summer service from Norwich Airport three months before it was due to begin.

Loganair has announced it will not be operating planned flights between Norwich and Inverness this summer, which were due to run between June 29 and September 3.

The route to the capital of the Scottish highlands was revealed in December alongside three weekend services from Norwich to the Isle of Mann for the TT motorcycle events.

But Loganair said pre-sales for the Inverness route had been 'disappointing', making it unviable.

A spokesman for the airline said: 'Despite this, Loganair remains fully committed to Norwich Airport – home to our only base outside of Scotland out of which we operate to Manchester, Edinburgh and Jersey and the Isle of Man during the summer.'

He added that all reservations will be automatically refunded.

It is the second service Loganair has cancelled from Norwich Airport in the last three months, after announcing in December that it would no longer run flights to Durham Tees Valley – a route which had been in operation for less than three months.

In February its sister airline BMI Regional stopped flights between Norwich and Aberdeen, also citing lack of demand.

A spokesman for Norwich Airport said: 'Route development is never an exact science and having tested the market Loganair clearly feel this route will not perform as hoped.

'We are heartened however by their continued commitment to Norwich, and the sustained growth we have seen in overall passenger numbers in the last 12 months.

'With new summer routes about to come on stream we expect this trend to continue as more and more people use their local airport for business and leisure travel.'
