Cromer's branch of high-street bank Santander has closed its doors for the final time today.

The Church Street bank has been axed after a study showed just 8% of customers used only the branch to do their banking.

The decision was announced in July, when a closure date of September 28 was confirmed.

At the time, a spokesman for Santander said it had been a difficult decision.

He added: 'This decision has not been taken lightly and follows a strategic review looking across our UK branch network, changing customer behaviour, branch and digital channel usage, alternative ways for our customers to bank with us, whilst supporting local communities.

'Closing our lesser used branches means we're able to reinvest in our branch network to improve facilities, as well as investing further in digital capabilities to deliver a better experience for our customers, while continuing to provide services to local communities.

'The nearest alternative Santander branches are located at North Walsham, Holt and Aylsham.'

The spokesman said Santander was looking to move 'the majority of colleagues' into jobs elsewhere in the group's network.

Analysis by consumer magazine Which? earlier this year revealed that more than 480 bank branches would close in 2017, a swathe of cuts which has prompted outcry from campaigners concerned that communities would lose important facilities and elderly or vulnerable customers would not be able to access services online.

Earlier this year Norwich and Peterborough announced it would close 28 branches across Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, with the remaining 20 being rebranded under the name of owners Yorkshire Building Society.

However, branches in Thetford, Fakenham and Dereham have been taken on by the Nottingham Building Society.
